Negotiation. Often problems can be resolved when negotiation is used effectivley. Through the use of a professional, either party to a transaction can understand the issues, and position themselves for effective and fair remedies. Neutrality is very valuable, to help give clarity.

Mediation.. When negotiation stalls, and progress is at an impass, mediation is used to help focus on the issues, and filter out the rhetoric, and emotion. The parties solve the problem on their own, with professional guidance.

Arbitration... When a dispute can not be resolved though negotiation or mediation, and litigation seems to be on the long horizon, arbitration can be used. An experienced, neutral third party will hold a hearing, and make a decision. This is often binding, but can also be unbinding to give a frame work for what litigation might provide.
